Sound, video (editing), DVD, TV - SuSE Linux 8.2 delivers an
extensive collection of powerful and impressive multimedia
applications. SuSE Linux 8.2 with ALSA allows you to play
CDs, MP3 files, and video clips, digitalize your old records and
tapes, and benefit from the variety of MIDI applications for musicians.
Some of these programs are introduced below. SuSE Linux 8.2 supports
on-board and high-end soundcards as well as professional cards for
sound studios. The support for old sound cards, multichannel sound
cards, and digital outputs was also improved.
Apart from proven programs like Audacity, NoteEdit, and players for
MP3, WAV, and audio CDs, SuSE Linux 8.2 presents many new tools.
qaRecord enables you to record WAV files, and cdrecord can be used to
burn these as an audio CD. Musicians can use QMidiRoute to define split
zones on their keyboard (or the virtual keyboard vkeybd).
|
Furthermore, users of the Professional Edition benefit from the
following expanded features: the sound font synthesizer iiwusynth
provides wavetable sound in software, i.e. wavetables in sound
font format can be used with any sound card. The modular
synthesizer and effect processor AlsaModularSynth was
substantially expanded. Both programs are compatible with the
JACK audio connection kit. JACK assists in sending audio data
across the machine in various ways. For example, you can play an
audio CD with alsaplayer, accompany the playback with vkeybd and
iiwusynth, and - depending on the performance of the machine -
add effects with AlsaModularSynth. The patchbay QJackConnect
helps you to keep in control of the audio connections.

Record Your CDs
Apart from a selection of special programs for ripping
audio CDs, this task can also be performed easily with
Konqueror - in WAV or Ogg Vorbis format. Simply insert the
CD, enter the address "audiocd:/" in Konqueror, and all
tracks in various formats will be displayed. The titles are
retrieved automatically from a CDDB server on the Internet.
Writing CDs is equally facile in Linux. k3b is one of the
programs that can be used for creating CDs.
|
Audacity - Your Recording Studio
Audacity 1.1 is a recording studio with a wide function
scope ranging from recording to editing. MP3 and Ogg Vorbis can
be imported directly. The application enables noise removal and a
host of other features.
The Ogg Vorbis audio compression was the winner of a blind
test with 3000 test listeners that was conducted recently by the
publisher Heise (C'T 19/2002). SuSE Linux 8.2 includes an
encoder for Ogg Vorbis and a large number of programs that
support this trend-setting audio format.

polyphonic structures can be set in a single note line. Using the
MusiXTeX system, which is also included in SuSE Linux, you can
